About Scott St. John, Rafael Hoekman, and Katherine Chi
Three of Canada’s illustrious musicians, violinist Scott St. John, cellist Rafael Hoekman and pianist Katherine Chi, join forces to help Calgary Pro Musica celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary. The concert will showcase the history of Canadian composition, especially the richly romantic works from the first half of the 20th century. As part of the program, Scott St. John recreates the 1930 London BBC Radio broadcast recital of Canadian Music by Harry and Frances Adaskin. This broadcast was pivotal in introducing the most prominent Canadian composers of the day to English audiences. It included violin showpieces by Hector Gratton, Healy Willan, Leo Smith and Claude Champagne. Also on the program is the Piano Trio by maritime composer Edward Manning. This sweeping work emulates the musical style of the great trios by Brahms.
This initiative is made possible by the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a collaboration between Calgary Foundation, Community Foundations of Canada, the Government of Canada, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast.
